I hate packing liquids, brushes, and endless makeup accessories when traveling and I try to keep my beauty routine pretty minimalistic overall. Trestique has been a game-changer. I can fit a whole makeup routine in the compact cylinder case which fits into any handbag. The mirror within the makeup case lid is convenient for on the go and the strap helps keep the case stable in your hand when applying makeup.
The Trestique team really thought of everything when formulating the beauty products and kits. All the formulations are super creamy and blendable which helps speed up the application process, and there are just enough shades to pick a good match and not get overwhelmed by options. I love the quality and the versatility of the products, and the sustainable packaging and built-in applicators are a plus.

I tried the Tea Tree Charcoal facial soap along with the Geranium Toner and Juniper Carrot Seed Oil. Wow, what a difference. I’ve used expensive, natural skincare products in the past due to having problematic skin since I was a teenager. I can honestly say that none of these products compare to Meow Meow Tweet.
I’ve been using these products for just over a month now and my skin has completely transformed. My hormonal acne around my chin has calmed. My dry skin has disappeared and all the redness and inflammation have been reduced significantly. I’ll never have perfect skin and I accept that, but these products showed at least 90% improvement in my skin. My self-esteem has also received a nice boost.

Founded by Ericka Rodriguez, Axiology launched on Etsy with 6 buttery lipstick shades made from 10 clean and cruelty-free ingredients. Today, this zero-waste makeup brand only utilizes plastic-free packaging that is made from 100% recyclable trash found on the coast of Bali, made possible through the brand’s partnership with a woman’s cooperative that turns Bali’s paper trash into beautiful packaging.
If you love multi-tasking as much as we do, be sure to purchase the brand’s top-rated “Balmies” that can be worn as eyeshadow, lipstick, or blush.
Pros
– Plastic-free packaging
– 100% all-natural vegan and cruelty-free formula
– “Balmies” 3-in-1 makeup stick makes it easy to achieve the clean makeup look
– Partnered with a woman’s co-op in Bali that focuses on empowering women with fair wages and reducing the waste on the Bali coastline
Cons
– Due to plastic-free packaging, some of the “Balmies” or lipsticks may arrive with the occasional dent or scratch
Featured Review
I absolutely love the “Balmies.” They blend so easily into your skin and look much more natural than other non-powder blushes I have tried. I also love how clever the packaging is. It’s a full-size product, but because it’s not in an applicator, it has a tiny footprint in your makeup bag. The multi-use component also gives it more bang for your buck. I can’t wait to get these as gifts for my friends. The non-plastic packaging can be delicate, so something to keep in mind when transporting.

Pros
– All packaging can be returned to Elate for free so they can refill it or recycle it for you
-100% Vegan and Cruelty-free formulas
Cons
– Not 100% of their beauty products are reusable, recyclable, or plantable, with 75% of their products meeting these criteria. However, the brand is working on the other 25%
– Not all of their products are organic, so if you are looking for completely organic cosmetics be sure to read the description closely before buying
Featured Review
I love all Elate products but the Unify Glow Powder is my absolute favorite. It’s so light it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing makeup and it makes my skin look flawless. I pair the glow powder with the Better Balm Tinted Lip Conditioner which is a wonderful balm for daily wear that’s a subtle pink. The balm has a creamy texture, is easy to apply, and actually holds up well, especially for a lip balm. I highly recommend the colors “Bloom” and “Poise.”
My finishing touch is the Elate Mascara which is incredibly lengthening and volumizing. It applies in thin layers so it’s easy to control the intensity without it clumping. The mascara lasts all day with no smudging but still comes off easily when washing off my makeup. Overall, there’s a lot to love about Elate’s beauty products beyond the sustainability and the convenient refills.

Featured Review
When trying this shampoo bar for the first time, I was a little worried it wouldn’t lather the same as regular shampoo. The Viori shampoo bar shut down any concerns as it lathers like crazy, and with the refreshing smell, it’s such a reinvigorating experience every time I shower. In terms of performance, my hair is the shiniest it’s ever been since using this shampoo. I also love the conditioner that leaves my hair soft and frizz-free.
Over time, the shampoo and conditioner bar continues working well without any gunky build-up (another worry of mine for waterless shampoo and conditioner). I’m now on my 3rd bar and am still loving it. It feels so clean and soft after every wash. Overall, my hair is smooth and feels fuller with weight and body.

If we could describe Flavedo & Albedo in two words they would be vibrant and playful. This zero-waste beauty brand isn’t just about helping to limit the beauty industry’s impact on the environment, but the team has set out to transform makeup into a fun, creative outlet – not just a way to conceal “imperfections.” From concealer to eyeshadows and beyond, the brand’s quality zero-waste makeup is 100% plastic-free with beauty products packaged in aluminum, glass, and sustainable timber. This collection of makeup will bring out your inner extravert with bold colors, shimmering finishes, and metallics that make a statement.
To further limit the brand’s environmental impact, they periodically offer an “Imperfect Picks” sale where customers can purchase slightly damaged makeup at a 60% discount on a first-come, first-serve basis. Typically, makeup companies will discard makeup that has slight imperfections which simply adds more plastic to our landfills. Now, Flavedo & Albedo is setting a new precedent that slightly flawed makeup doesn’t have to mean a trip to the landfill.
Pros
– 100% plastic-free products
– Vegan and Cruelty-free products
– Bold, on-trend makeup colors and styles
– Packaging is 100% recyclable
– Offer slightly damaged makeup at a 60% discount
Cons
– The sky blue eyeshadow isn’t vegan
Featured Review
I love Flavedo & Albedo products. I get so many compliments whenever I’m wearing their products, particularly on the High-Glow Highlighter and the Bright Stripe Eyeliners (I love the lavender) that give the eye such a subtle glimmer. The makeup isn’t just pretty, the color is rich and long-lasting. The Dew Tint in “Toffee” leaves such a gorgeous stain on lips and cheeks. I love how long-wearing it is and how it moves with you throughout the day (aka fading nicely). Overall, I simply love this brand. It’s plastic-free, cruelty-free, high performing and high quality, reasonably priced, and has beautiful packaging.

Featured Review
My favorite River Organics product is the cream blush in the color “Pinch.” This Blush is amazing and it’s the perfect color. When you open it, it is very solid but as soon as it touches your skin, it melts and blends without much effort. The formula is moisturizing but not greasy and the healthy glow lasts throughout the day. The lip balm is also moisturizing but not sticky. The “Rose Gold” lip balm leaves a nice soft natural color with a bit of shine and sparkle. It’s my daily go-to lip balm. Overall, these all-natural, clean makeup products are perfect for an everyday fresh face.

The Mini Kit Complete Skincare was a great sampler to discover if there are low-waste skincare products that will be effective on my skin. My skin is very oily in some places and super dry and flakey in others. Many moisturizers have either been too heavy and caused my skin to break out or are not moisturizing enough. So far, the Rosehip Cream has been a perfect balance. It absorbed so fast into my skin immediately making it feel soft, smooth, and nourished. The Charcoal Soap is great for clearing up any blemishes, and the Pumpkin Enzyme Mask brightens my skin for a healthy glow. I will definitely be keeping the Rosehip Cream, Charcoal Soap, and Pumpkin Mask in my daily skincare routine.

– Labels printed in-house using recycled paper in a green energy-powered lab
Cons
– Their refill program only applies to customers located in Australia. However, it’s important to note that due to the vast amount of air miles and fuel that would be used to refill empties from international customers, this decision is ultimately best for the environment
Featured Review
I love Dirty Hippie Cosmetics, especially the organic floral toner in rose. It makes my skin feel hydrated and fresh before applying my makeup. To make this mist extra soothing and refreshing, you can store it in the fridge. However, the mineral cream concealer is the standout product for me. The coverage feels so light but really does the job of concealing. The natural ingredients and sustainable packaging are what pushed me to try it, and I’m so excited and thankful that I’ve found my new favorite concealer after trying so many products. I love the overall quality of their products and how gentle they are on my skin. The low-waste packaging and sustainability of their products are a great bonus.

Zerra & Co products are a must-have. My favorite is the neutral eyeshadow palette that has long-lasting staying power. I love the gentle shimmer that catches the light, with colors that complement each other beautifully. I use the white color for highlight and I love the bronzy shade across my lids. This palette also makes it easy to do a smokey eye for a more done-up look. I also love the Zerra & Co lip balms. I recommend Sugar Plum (so vibrant) and Antique Pink (muted, yet sophisticated). The lip balms glide on smooth with a creamy finish. Finally, the mineral powder foundation helped even out my skin and was so light and airy. I Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a foundation that’s not too heavy.

It doesn’t get more organic than Nudi Goods. One of my favorite products from Nudi Goods is the dry oil moisturizer. First, I was only using it for my hands, but I’ve started using it as a night moisturizer for my face and body and my skin has never looked or felt better. The oil doesn’t make my skin feel greasy after it’s applied, and I wake up with my skin looking smooth and supple. The copper poppy shimmer stick is my favorite blush/rosy-copper bronzer that I have ever used. The formula is perfectly tinted so I can go from subtle to saucy, depending on how many layers are applied. I’ve started using the shimmer stick for eyeshadow and it really makes my eyes pop. I like their mascara but the all-natural texture of the product takes some getting used to when applying. I recommend experimenting with different application brushes and using a setting spray to ensure it doesn’t smudge throughout the day. Overall, these products are a win/win: good for the environment and good for your skin.

I’m excited about Izzy’s mission and having a seamless and sustainable way to refill my makeup. In terms of products, I tried refillable lip gloss. The texture is very smooth, and not sticky at all. It also feels hydrating on my lips and lasts a few hours. The color (NTRL GLD) is a very lovely soft, neutral, and pinky nude that would work on just about any skin tone/color. I also tried the brow gel which is also great and lasts all day. It gives me amazing fluffy brows and fills them in a bit for a fuller yet manicured look.

Zero-waste packaging focuses on using only materials that can be reused or composted, instead of ending up in a landfill.
One of the easiest ways for beauty brands to lessen their environmental impact is with refillable beauty products that cut down on waste and help to preserve natural resources. In fact, only 9% of the world’s plastics are actually being recycled. This means that the majority of plastic ends up in landfills.
Refillable products also help to conserve natural resources. According to a study conducted by Waterwise.org, it takes 22 gallons of water to produce just one pound of plastic. The beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging every year (most of which is plastic) making a huge impact on water conservation.
In light of these statistics, many zero-waste makeup brands are starting to emerge with a focus on creating low-waste beauty products, reducing carbon emissions, and offering zero-waste makeup in recycled and refillable packaging.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing when it comes to zero-waste beauty products. If you have makeup you absolutely love that you don’t want to part ways with, that’s ok. However, if you are interested in finding zero-waste makeup to replace some makeup in your existing beauty routine, here are a few quick tips:
Start with finding the right shades: Once you find a zero-waste makeup brand that you like, look at the shade description on the makeup you are trying to replace and search for a similar shade on the brand’s website. Many sites will have an easy-to-use search bar.
Don’t forget performance: Once you know the right shade you are looking for, determine what you love about your existing makeup. Is it long-lasting? What benefits does it provide? For instance, if you love the lengthening benefits of your current mascara and the fact that it doesn’t smudge, make sure the replacement makeup focuses on that benefit and you read reviews to confirm performance.
Know your ingredients: When replacing any makeup product with a zero-waste makeup option, be sure to read the ingredients to make sure there isn’t anything that will irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction.
Some of the best zero-waste makeup brands include Trestique, Dirty Hippie Cosmetics, Zao Organic Makeup, Flavedo & Albedo, Elate Beauty, Axiology, River Organics, and Zerra & Co, just to name a few. Not only are these makeup brands low waste, but many of them also offer vegan, cruelty-free makeup with organic ingredients that are palm oil free in recycled paper and biodegradable packaging.
Palm oil is the most commonly used vegetable oil in the world. It’s found in everything from food to beauty products, and the majority of it is produced in Southeast Asia. The problem with palm oil is that it’s a major driver of deforestation. In order to make room for palm oil plantations, rainforests are cleared, which leads to the loss of animal habitats and biodiversity. It’s also a major contributor to climate change, as the clearing of forests releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
This is why it’s important to purchase palm oil-free makeup whenever possible. By choosing brands that don’t use palm oil in their products, we can help reduce the demand for this destructive crop.
There are a few simple things you can do to make your makeup routine more sustainable and less wasteful:
Look for compostable packaging: Some zero-waste makeup brands use compostable packaging, which means the packaging can be broken down and used as fertilizer after it’s been used. Look for this type of packaging when making your purchase.
Look for refillable makeup: Many zero-waste makeup brands offer refillable products, which means you can keep using the same packaging over and over again. This helps reduce waste and save you money in the long run.
Choose multipurpose makeup: Another way to reduce waste is to choose makeup that can be used for more than one purpose. For instance, instead of buying a lip tint, blush, and eyeshadow, find 3-in-1 makeup that can multitask.
