Gwenyth Paltrow & Apple Martin
Apple Martin isn’t afraid to make a statement with her mother Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic wardrobe. Just last year she tried on her mom’s Alexander McQueen gown that caused a stir in the early 2000s.
When fans inquired on Instagram if Paltrow’s daughter has ever worn any of her fashion archives The Goop founder shared a photo of her daughter Apple in the same Alexander McQueen gown that Paltrow wore to the 2002 Academy Awards.
“She loves to go into the archive and try things on, and it’s really fun,” Paltrow shared in an interview for “Today with Hoda and Jenna” aired on April 17, 2024. She was referring to a special archival closet in her home, dedicated to storing her iconic fashion looks throughout the years.
Vanessa Paradis & Lily Rose Depp
Among the many traits Vanessa and Lily-Rose share, their exceptional sense of style stands out the most. As Chanel muses, they consistently grace film premieres and fashion shows in stunning Chanel outfits. But first and foremost, Paradis was a fashion icon in the 90s, and as that era’s style has resurged in popularity, Depp has embraced it too—often incorporating pieces directly from her mother’s wardrobe.
Lily Rose Depp is no stranger to raiding her mother’s closet as she has been spotted in many of her mother’s iconic 90s pieces.
Cindy Crawford & Kaia Gerber
Flashback to when Kaia Gerber celebrated her 18th birthday dressed as the mirror image of her supermodel mother, reminiscent of Crawford’s appearances at the 1992 Versace “Rock ‘N Rule” Fashion Show and the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. At both events, Crawford wore a similarly daring outfit that was just as avant-garde then as it is today.
Gerber loves wearing iconic pieces from her mother’s past looks. “I definitely take a lot of her vintage pieces because those are the most iconic to me,” Gerber told Harper Bazaar. “We’re not the same shoe size which is really upsetting to me because I thought that I could steal all of her shoes!”
Heidi Klum & Leni Klum
In 2022, Leni Klum shared on Instagram that she wore her mom Heidi Klum’s dress to her high school prom. “Prom night in mama’s dress 🖤,” she wrote, alongside photos of herself in the sleek black strapless gown, complemented by a fine tennis necklace and a glittering handbag.
Heidi originally donned the dress for a Comic Relief comedy event in 1998 and gave her nod of approval for her daughter’s chic look in the Instagram post comments.
Heather Locklear & Ava Sambora
Browse the racks at Urban Outfitters and it’s easy to see that vintage band t-shirts never go out of style. In 2020, Ava Sambora posted pictures on Instagram sporting her mom’s vintage Bon Jovi shirt, humorously noting, “I got it from my mama (Like I literally got this shirt from my mom’s closet 🤪).”
To demonstrate that good genes (and rock music) run in the family, Ava — daughter of Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora — also included a photo of Locklear wearing the same shirt two decades earlier in her post.
Kate & Lila Moss
The saying “Like mother, like daughter” aptly describes supermodel Kate Moss and her doppelganger daughter, Lila Moss. Although Lila has large footsteps to follow, she is building an impressive career of her own, with a British Vogue cover and multiple major runway appearances already to her credit. While not exactly the same dress, Lila showcased an outfit of the day featuring a signature style from her mom’s closet.
The look was from the 2023 Royal Academy of Arts Summer Preview Party in London where Lila Moss channeled her mother’s iconic style by wearing her trademark garment: a slip dress. When seeking fashion inspiration, the up-and-coming model has consistently admired her supermodel mother. “It’s so funny because I would copy her outfits consistently,” Lila told Vogue last year in its Diary of a Model video series. She goes on to explain that she loves Kate’s minimalist approach to style, a philosophy that she embraces in her own fashion choices.
Courteney Cox & Coco Arquette
In 2019, Courteney Cox’s daughter Coco Arquette wore a vintage purple floral dress from her mom’s wardrobe. Courteney originally wore it to the 1998 premiere of “Snake Eyes”, and there’s no denying this dress remains on-trend today. “I’m not one to hold onto things, but this was a damn good purchase! 21 years later…” Courteney shared on her Instagram.
Catherine Zeta-Jones & Carys Zeta Douglas
What better way to celebrate your 21st birthday than in a chic party dress from your iconic mother’s closet? Carys Zeta Douglas celebrated this milestone birthday in a pink satin slip dress with lace details and floral embroidery worn by her mom Catherine Zeta-Jones at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.
Brooke Shields & Grier Henchy
Grier Henchy chose a beige lace square-neck gown from Brooke Shields’ closet to honor her mom at the debut of her cabaret act. This stunning dress first made its appearance at the Marshall Field’s Fash Bash in August 2001.
This isn’t the first time Henchy stole one of her mom’s red carpet looks, she also wore her mom’s strapless scarlet dress from the 1998 Golden Globes to prom in 2021.
Amy Reinhart & Lily Reinhart
At Marie Claire’s Fresh Faces event in 2018, Lili Reinhardt stunned in a dress directly from her mom’s wardrobe. On her Instagram Story, she thanked her mom, Amy, for the strappy, rosette-decorated pink dress, writing, “Thanks for letting me borrow your dress, Mom.”
Victoria & Harper Beckham
You’re never too young to raid mom’s closet, as shown by an Instagram post of Harper Beckham during a 2021 family vacation in Italy. She was photographed wearing a lace-trimmed orchid dress from the Victoria Beckham collection, highlighting one of the many perks of having a fashion designer for a mom.
